The Resident Evil Viruses Explained

The Resident Evil Viruses Explained

Have you ever wondered about the numerous Resident Evil Viruses? We explain each one and how it affects its host.

The Resident Evil universe is vast and spans across 25 years of horror, Zombies, and fighting to survive. All of this mayhem and confusion was brought about by a single virus known as the “Progenitor Virus.” Many Viruses were developed and transformed from there, turning humans and animals into abominations, all in the name of finding a cure for a sick little girl.

There were various viruses created and they are listed below along with their origin and how they affect their host:

The Progenitor Virus:

This virus is the start of all the trouble and originates in the Kijuju region of Western Africa. The Virus was derived from a rare and highly toxic flower that was found close to the  Ndipaya marshlands. The “Stairway to the Sun” was the name given to this flower. The Ndipaya tribe held the flower in such high regard that they would feed it to their hunters, and whoever survived would become the tribe’s leader.

In an expedition in 1966 a three month expedition consisting of Marcus, Dr. Oswell E. Spencer, Earl Spencer, and Dr. Brandon Bailey, discovered the Garden of the Sun and the Sonnentreppe flowers. Their hypothesis was confirmed with isolation of the virus on the 4th of December that year.

Separate progenitor strains were developed and marketed to the United States government as bioweapons. Spencer then began human experimentation, abducting Lisa and Jessica Trevor for this reason. Owing to a lack of interesting findings, Jessica was killed, but her daughter Lisa was kept on because she posessed superhuman abilities.

The T-Virus (Tyrant Virus):

This is the name assigned to a group of mutant progenitor virus strains. The purpose of this virus, which was first developed by Umbrella Pharmaceuticals in the late 1960s, was to remove the need for large-scale armies. They also needed money to fund their eugenics program, “The Wesker Project.”

This is the virus that effectively turned those infected into zombies due to its tendency to cause severe brain damage, superhuman strength, aggression, and such severe hunger that they would resort to cannibalism.

They found that 10% of the population was biologically resistant to the virus and devised a strategy to counteract this, resulting in a 0% immunity rate. Dr. William Birkin’s Arklay Laboratory team created a new species of animal to track down and destroy survivors, starting with basic Bio-Organic Weapons like the Web Spinner and breaking ground with the genetically chimeric Hunter.

The T-Virus project, which used the T-002 strain of the virus, focused on developing intelligent Bio-Weapons called the Tyrants in the 1980s. The T-Virus was then made available to various organisations after Umbrella collapsed, and the T-Abyss was created as a result of this widespread availability of the Virus for testing.

The T-Abyss Virus:

The discovery of the Abyss virus, a retrovirus native to the Hadopelagic zone of the Kermadec Trench deep beneath the sea, led to the development of this virus, which is a strain of the T-Virus.

This virus was discovered in a variety of deep-sea fish species, and its genetic material consisted of double-strand DNA (dsDNA) with genes linked to Piscean anatomy, which allowed for improved swimming ability in high-pressure environments.

The Montpellier University of Marine Science spliced this virus with the Ti-Virus. Project financier Morgan Lansdale, then the head of the FBC, claimed that a major bioterror incident exposed as a military threat would boost support for American counter-terrorism operations

Just one known attack with this virus occurred on Terragrigia, and it was carried out by the terrorist group II Veltro. An epidemic was started on their bases, the cruise ships Queen Dido, Queen Semiramis, and Queen Zenobia, with the former sinking.

The Abyss Virus was thought to restructure species by breaking down fat, strengthening muscles, and strengthening the skeleton. When the t-Abyss virus was exposed to humans, it was discovered that the Abyss genome contained DNA found in marine life.

The “Ooze,” in which a person develops a bloated grey body and suckers, is a common human mutation. Due to a significant loss of body water, the Ooze would instinctively seek out other species to replenish itself.

The G-Virus (Golgotha Virus):

Dr. William Birkin of The Umbrella Corporation’s Arklay lab isolated the Golgotha virus. Following her immune system’s unexplained destruction of a NE-Type parasite, it was discovered in Lisa Trevor’s body. As a result, the virus may have existed ever since late 1960s, when she was first tested.

Umbrella USA created the G-virus as a bioweapon to compete with and surpass Tyrant Virus (“t-Virus”). The Golgotha virus causes significant transformation in its host, to the point that patients are no longer identifiable as humans. Golgotha mutants are highly fertile and reproduce asexually.

While the T-virus causes body necrosis, the Golgotha virus can both restore and resurrect dead cells.

When an outbreak occurs, this virus is known to be the biggest threat to the world. The USS attacked NEST on the night of September 22nd, fatally wounding Dr. Birkin.

He infected himself with a last sample of Golgotha and transformed into a strong G mutant who massacred the security team and leaked both Golgotha and the Tyrant Virus into the sewers as part of his dying act. Dr. Birkin started to roam around Raccoon City after the t-Virus outbreak, looking for people to implant with G-embryos in order to propagate his new species.

The exact number of Gs produced is unknown, but it is known that some corpses were infected with the virus and turned into G-Zombies.

The T+G Virus:

This is a species of retrovirus descended from the Progenitor virus engineered by Umbrella Europe between 1998 and 2002. Worked ceased on this virus following a raid in the Paris laboratory.

In 1998, Umbrella Headquarters directed NEST to hand over Golgotha Virus study to Dr. Christine Henry at the Loire Laboratory. Following virus acquisition, an Epsilon strain was subjected to anti-G antibodies to induce selection, resulting in the emergence of an enhanced t-Virus.

This virus bestowed defensive electrical properties on its host, amplifying the body’s electromagnetic field to create a high voltage that enabled it to repel projectiles. Former Umbrella employee Morpheus D. Duvall stole an agent known as “V.0.9.2.” and administered it to himself, resulting in complete adaptation of the aforementioned bio-electrical properties and no loss of intelligence.

The “Charged Particle Rifle” was the only known device capable of injuring a T+G Virus-infected organism.

The T-Veronica Virus:

This virus originates from a retrovirus that exists within the Genome of certain Ant queens.

Alexia when observing these creatures mistook their nature for a complete adoration for their queen and drew parallels to her own megalomaniac lifestyle. She then considered adding this genome of the virus to the progenitor virus and added plant genes in the virus’s makeup too.

The first human test subject was Alexander Ashford which was injected by his children Alexia and Alfred in 1982. This experiment was a monumental failure leading to the imprisonment of Alexander Ashford in the Antarctic Base. He scared the facility workers so much with his unhuman growls that they dubbed him “Nosferatu”.

Alexia christened the virus “t-Veronica”, in the name of her cell donor. She then started experimenting on herself, she decided that to prevent the degeneration her father faced she would go into a cryogenic coma for 15 years while she adapted to the virus.

Albert Wesker found out about the virus and went in search of Alexia. Finding her alive he revived her and after she experimented on another victim that later died she and Wesker got into an epic battle where she mutated into a powerful being.

Infected people develop arthropod-like characteristics in their mutants, such as stiff carapaces and insectoid arms. A t-Veronica host’s blood often transforms into a chemical that spontaneously combusts when exposed to oxygen, allowing the host to use their own blood as a projectile.

It, like the other progenitor and T-Virus strains, causes serious mental degeneration. The host must live with the t-Veronica virus for many years in order for the virus to adapt to their body and coexist perfectly.

However, the virus grew to enormous proportions in South America’s tropical and humid environment, posing a threat to entire ecosystems.

The T-Phobos Virus:

The Tyrant Phobos virus or t-Phobos Virus is a retrovirus descending from the Progenitor virus. It was developed to create superhumans with no negative side-effects. The project was headed by Dr. Alex Wesker.  The conditions of the virus were very strict and of the thirteen people infected with the virus only Drs. Albert and Alex Wesker survived.

The t-Phobos responds to the host’s consciousness, unlike its predecessor viruses, which mutate the host (almost) immediately after infection. Since it only responds to norepinephrine, the virus can not affect the host unless it is feeling fear and panic. The virus spreads through the body in seconds if the host’s mind is affected by extreme fear. The virus seems to only mutate men, with infected women promptly dying in considerable pain.

The sensor bracelets used to quantify adrenaline and noradrenaline levels were color-coded to indicate different phases. Green represented normalcy, orange represented stress, flashing red represented fear, and red represented pathogenesis, or the initiation of symptoms. While red usually indicated an imminent mutation, due to the virus’s adaptation to the host, adapted hosts may remain permanently red with no visible symptoms.

The virus slowly altered the host’s genes, triggering superhuman strength, regenerative power, and glowing red eyes, identical to the Progenitor virus adapters, in hosts with higher than normal levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline below the threshold for transformation. These results, on the other hand, will only appear after death or serious injury.

The results of secondary infection on a human host were close to those of the t-virus, but due to adrenaline and noradrenaline control, the entire infection and mutation process was significantly delayed. Hosts remained human in the Afflicted stage, but were increasingly eroded by the virus and plagued by madness.

The virus invaded every cell in the host’s body during the Rotten stage, transforming it into a Zombie-like creature. This mutation had the same features as the t-virus.

The Uroboros Virus:

This virus is an RNA in the progenitor family. Engineered by Albert Wesker as the ultimate eugenics tool, a less potent strain was later developed by Dr. Alex Wesker to serve as a bio-weapon. For both strains of Uroboros, there is currently no vaccine available. The virus’s name is taken from the Greek mythological entity Ouroboros, which was a snake or snake-like creature that consumed itself.

Uroboros was too lethal for any host to sustain life in its original form. Uroboros’ rapid amplification could only be managed with the introduction of Jill Valentine’s t-Virus antibodies, which left a small percentage of the human population alive.

As Uroboros infects the cells of an organism, it inserts its genes into the host’s genome in an effort to fuse with it. The merge is effective for those whose genetic sequence is compatible with Uroboros, bestowing supernatural abilities on the host.

Many with incompatible genomes succumb to the virus’s unchecked amplification, and their cells are taken over by Uroboros. The contaminated tissues that result becomes organized into undifferentiated tentacles that consume the host’s body and any other organic matter they can enter. These tentacles are held together by orange pustule-like organs that function as the organic growth’s control core.

The destruction of the heart destroys the body’s cohesion and, as a result, its survival. When the virus is injected into every body, the same thing happens. The only telltale signs of a good merge are glowing slit-like eyes, enhanced strength, speed, endurance, stamina, and a powerful regeneration ability.

The C-Virus (Chrysalid Virus):

The Chrysalid Virus (C-Virus) is a virus genus created by The Family as a next-generation bio-weapon. The C-Virus was able to retain some intelligence in mutants and revive the dead while inducing violent mutations in hosts thanks to a genome containing genes from t-Veronica and Golgotha Virus. In 2013, an effective vaccine was created, putting an end to the vaccine’s reliability as a weapon.

Dr. Carla Radames, a child prodigy scouted by the Simmons Foundation shortly after graduation, led the C-Virus Project. Dr. Radames was soon assigned to a Family laboratory, where he played a key role in viral and Bio-Organic Weapons research.

Though some research has been done since 1999, the C-Virus Project began in 2001 and has gone through several changes since then. The C-Virus template was altered with the splicing of genes derived from t-Veronica when working on a version of Progenitor Virus or t-Virus.

In human hosts, the C-Virus causes serious mutations.

The C-Virus contains Golgotha-derived genes that enable it to resurrect the dead. As a result, if the virus is released as a gas, it can resurrect corpses as Zombies, which can happen centuries after their death if properly preserved.

Intelligence is more likely to live in hosts than t-Virus strains. They can still obey instructions given to them before mutation and maintain their knowledge of how to perform acts in J’avo. The Edonian rebels, for example, used guns, tanks, and planes to battle the BSAA, just as they did the Edonian military.

We thought we’d include the Plaga (Las Plagas) and the “Mold,” both of which aren’t actually viruses but play an important role in the Resident Evil franchise.

The Resident Evil Viruses Explained

Plaga (Las Plagas):

These are a genus of parasitic arthropod that are endemic to a remote mountainous region of Spain. The name Las Plagas simply means “The Plague”.

Plagas are able to influence their host’s actions by latching onto the nervous system, increasing aggression in human hosts, dubbed Ganados, as well as forming a social cluster with other hosts. Plagas can influence their hosts’ behavior by latching onto the nervous system, raising aggression in human hosts known as Ganados, and forming a social cluster with other hosts.

Though often connected with Spain, the Plagas may have first arose in West Africa in the Ndipaya region.  Los Iluminados began work on studying the Plagas, and over time genetically engineered as many as three new species, which were significantly more difficult to be removed from the host.

The Recessive Plagas took charge of the host; the Dominant Plagas left the host alone, allowing them to issue orders to the Ganados and imbuing them with the power to mutate at will; and the Queen Plaga, a castle-dwelling organism that asexually produced more eggs.

Saddler’s ability to manage his increasing organization was jeopardized, so the Dominant hosts were reduced to himself, Salazar, and Fr. Bitores Mendez, the village priest who assisted him in converting the local populace, who would act as an army to keep spies at bay.

Plaga research has been found to mutate humans in some conditions, whether making them stronger, causing them to grow to gigantic proportions, or allowing them to regrow entire body parts in seconds, according to ongoing human testing. The Plagas also created human-animal hybrids, resulting in the Novistador, Verdugo, and U-3.

The Mold:

The Mold was developed in 2000 and was a successful bioweapon since it has the potential to transform enemies into allies or hostiles into servants, reducing the costs of incarceration and even warfare, it has attracted negative attention from the bioweapon sector.

Five lines of human B.O.W.s were developed over many years, each one better able to manipulate the Mold and integrate into human society. To decide their place in the line, each was assigned a letter-number ranging from A to E. The prototype E-Type, “E-001” – also known as Eveline – demonstrated extraordinary abilities.

Eveline was discovered to be capable of exerting a profound influence over the bodies and minds of those selected to be living hosts of the Mold.

In a follow-up study of Eveline’s skills, participants reported seeing images of her even when she wasn’t present, and their will was twisted from companionship or assistance demands to self-mutilation or aggressive actions.

Infected people have recorded a schizophrenic condition in which they hear Eveline’s voice even when no one else can hear it. This psychological shock aids Eveline’s brainwashing ability by breaking down the mind’s normal barriers.

The E-Type is capable of producing superorganisms made up of countless mycelia from his or her mutamycete’s mycelia, the fungal filaments introduced during the aforementioned operation.

This is the agent responsible for the infection of other individuals and the cause of the symptoms stated above, being extremely resistant and contagious. The fungus is hereafter  referred to as mold, and the subjects were called by the researchers as Molded, in a nod to be made of mold, but also in the meaning of “molded”, as in “shaped”
